Standout Moment(s):

Wrapped in video game nostalgia, it was a throwback to the days of Sonic vs. Mario, Sega vs. Nintendo, when those rivalries defined a generation, and the games became legendary. Years later, bands continue to celebrate that innovation through music. On the 2025 voyage, two acts leaned into that retro-gaming spirit: Powerglove and, now, hailing from Miami, Florida, and conveniently not having far to go to arrive at the port in Miami, the Sega-infused Nintendo’s nemesis: Super Monster Party. Despite the playful rivalry, there’s no real “nemesis” here. Super Monster Party goes beyond instrumental retrogame-infused metal beats, delivering blistering tunes ranging from death metal to power metal, all wrapped into one unique-sounding act.

Band leader Rei Sega, a true DIY force, has clearly poured relentless effort into every aspect of the project, from stage attire to music videos and whatever the band dreams up next. That work paid off with the band’s first appearance on the metal seas, and Rei proved he was built for the stage. His extroverted enthusiasm extends far beyond vocals, constantly engaging the crowd and demanding more energy in return.

By the end of the voyage, Super Monster Party had become one of the most talked-about bands on the ship. Whether grabbing pizza or passing through the Windjammer, the chatter was the same: “I’m going to check out Super Monster Party,” or “Super Monster Party was great.” They were the party band, the fun band, and the breakout act whose second set at the Star Lounge overflowed with people. Even catching only part of that performance, it was impossible to miss the impact: the room was packed, movement was limited, and the energy was on fire. Super Monster Party made a strong case for a return, regardless of which musical style they choose to execute: power or death metal.

What is the Artist Spotlight?

Well, it’s more than a review of their performance; as 70000tons goes, each band is a headliner, and we treat each one as such, giving them their own spread, discussing who they are and what they’ve been up to since the cruise. Each spotlight coincides with any updates from 70000tons organizers (if any), leading to days before setting sail. An extensive coverage like no other.
