Standout Moment(s):
One of the reasons we keep returning to 70000tons is the thrill of the unexpected. Alongside a lineup of returning favorites and well-known headliners, the cruise consistently introduces us to standout artists from across the globe. For the 2025 edition, Cabrakaän is one such discovery. Now based in Canada, this symphonic folk metal outfit originally from Mexico left a strong impression, even if the high-angle Studio B stage didn’t quite capture the full scope of their dynamic presence. Their performance makes you want to revisit Aztlán and keep an eye on what promises to be a bright future.

Latest Cabrakaän News
Let’s rewind a bit: Cabrakaän’s 2023 album Aztlán was nominated for “Best Metal Recording” at the 2024 YYC Music Awards, marking a major step in the band’s continued rise, highlighted by their appearance on the 2025 edition of 70000tons of Metal. Most recently, the group performed at Ampfest on July 20th and Forsaken Rite on Friday (25th). Next, they’re set to hit the stage at Loud As Hell Open Air Festival from August 1–3.
Though currently based in Canada, Cabrakaän proudly draws on their Mexican heritage.
The band recently commemorated 700 years of México-Tenochtitlán, stating:
“700 Years of México-Tenochtitlán. This weekend, a beautiful event was held in Mexico City to commemorate 700 years since the founding of México-Tenochtitlán, the powerful capital of the Mexica civilization (often referred to as the Aztecs), although their true name is Mexicas. While the exact founding date is still debated by historians, March 13, 1325 was officially chosen back in 1925 as the symbolic date, and it continues to be a source of pride and cultural reflection for millions.
The iconic image of the eagle devouring a snake on a cactus, found at the center of the Mexican flag, comes from the prophecy that guided the Mexicas to the site where they would build their great city, what is now Mexico City. It’s important to remember that the Mexicas were not alone. Mesoamerica was home to many extraordinary cultures: Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, Totonac, Purépecha, Tlaxcaltec, and many more. Each with their own unique traditions, languages, and worldviews.
As a band, we are deeply inspired by the myths, music, and warrior spirit of these ancient peoples. Their legacy lives on in every beat we play, every lyric we sing, and every story we tell. Let’s continue to honor and celebrate the beauty and resilience of our Indigenous roots.

In addition to honoring their roots, the group shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne:
What is the Artist Spotlight?
Well, it’s more than a review of their performance; as 70000tons goes, each band is a headliner, and we treat each one as such, giving them their own spread, discussing who they are and what they’ve been up to since the cruise. Each spotlight coincides with any updates from 70000tons organizers (if any), leading to days before setting sail. An extensive coverage like no other.
