2000, the beginning of a brand new century struck fear in many as the Y2K panic spread. Luckily, no computers burst into flames, and it wasn’t the end of the world. It’s hard to believe Wilson, the Volleyball from the movie Cast Away, is turning twenty this year. 2000 was an era when illegal downloading just started as well as social media, which began in 1997 with Six Degrees. However, blogging picked up as individuals relied on LiveJournal or Deviant Art to express their feelings or share their food instead of today’s Facebook and Instagram. AOL Instant Messenger (R.I.P. 2017) was the primary source for socially connecting on the internet. Pagers were still a thing, and the symbol we use today for hashtags were once only known as the “pound” or “number” sign. People would send out #143 or #8008 codes on their pagers instead of their cell phones to avoid the ridiculously high rates at the time. As for music, this was the year when a plethora of new sounds emerged, including Linkin Park, Goatwhore, Disturbed, and A Perfect Circle. Here are nineteen metal albums that debuted in 2000. 01) Kittie, Spit
Release Date: January 11, 2000
Kittie’s debut album opened doors for many women in metal. Songs including “Spit,” “Suck,” “Do You Still Think I’m a Whore,” “Brackish,” and “Choke,” haven’t gotten old or overplayed after twenty years of listening. Since then, the Canadian metal outfit has gone through a number of lineup changes (R.I.P Trish Doan). However, the Lander sisters, Morgan and Mercedes remain. The band has recently celebrated two decades of Kittie with the release of their 20th Anniversary Reunion show. The band’s most recent album is 2011’s I’ve Failed You.
02) Goatwhore, The Eclipse of Ages into Black
Release Date: February 22, 2000
2000’s The Eclipse of Ages into Black is what started it all for these New Orleans death thrashers. The group began with Rotten Records, and by their third full-length effort, 2006’s A Haunting Curse, their career blossomed after signing to Metal Blade Records. They’ve remained with the label ever since, which we saw in their latest effort 2017’s Vengeful Ascension.
03) Disturbed, The Sickness
Release Date: March 07, 2000
2000 was the year when many bands (as you can see on this list) emerged. During this time, Kittie and Disturbed toured together. And twenty years later, Disturbed are celebrating two-decades of The Sickness this summer with a massive tour. There was a time in 2011 when we weren’t sure about the band’s future when they went on hiatus shortly after 2010’s Asylum. However, since then, they’ve expanded with 2015’s Immortalized and their latest effort, 2018’s Evolution. Overall, Disturbed went from selling out clubs to filling up massive iconic venues, including Madison Square Garden.
04) Isis, Celestial
Release Date: April 03, 2000
Isis (the band), gave us post-metal bliss with 2000’s Celestial. Unfortunately, the group split up shortly after 2009’s Wavering Radiant. Since their break, the group has been relatively silent up until 2018 when they returned to the stage for the first time in eight years under the new moniker, Celestial. The band performed for the West Coast tribute show to the late Cave In, Old Man Gloom, Zozobra bassist Caleb Scofield.
05) Decapitated, Winds of Creation
Release Date: April 17, 2000
Decapitated have been through hell and back, and back again, and so forth since 2000’s Winds of Creation. They’ve seen death, multiple accidents, prison, lineup changes, the works. No matter how bruised and scarred their experiences have been, these Polish death metal giants have found a way to pick up the pieces and continue to create blistering tunes, including their latest effort, 2017’s Anticult.
