I took a sweet minute trying to define this band because I had never heard them before they popped up on the roster last month (I guess I’ve been living under a rock). A gut instinct came in immediately that they were a Hardcore scene guilty pleasure, and I wanted to define them correctly.
Cloakroom will be kicking everyone’s ass at Sound and Fury fest this year, taking very high stakes of life-changing performances even higher alongside bands like Trash Talk, Knocked Loose, Contention, Peeling Flesh, and so many more. All enormous voices right now for the brutality of mankind in festival form.
Last Leg Of The Human Table, is the band’s fourth album, released on February 28 via Closed Casket Activities. It’s striking how this band has developed with an impressive consistency over the years. They are like the Bravehearts of shoegaze. If anyone’s confused about shoegaze as a genre, think of the greatest cult classic noir film and consider an idea for a different soundtrack. Cloakroom strum the guitars like Santo and Johnny if they were laced with all the heartstrings of ZZ Top’s First Album.
My favorite three tracks are “On Joy and Undeserving,” “The Lights Are On,” and “Turbine Song.” All of these are the angelic mortar for a depression period we’ve entered. They all embark on a vibrant story of melodic melancholy but an understanding that we can make the lul period or the seasons of deep breaths go in the direction of empowering worth.
