Yesterday, Tom Petty suddenly died at the relatively young age of 66, having just wrapped up a tour last week. As the tributes continue to roll in from countless musicians and those who he influenced, it’s obvious that Petty and his music touched a large swath of artists just beyond rock. Foo Fighters have covered Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown” for years now, and we’re sure they’ll be pulling it out again on tour starting this weekend at Cal Jam. Here’s a version of it from when they were touring with Motorhead back in 2011.
Also, Indiana shoegaze trio Cloakroom just released their sophomore album, and first for Relapse, Time Well earlier this year. And they were obviously also influenced by Petty as well, as today via Bandcamp, they released a cover of “You Don’t Know How It Feels,”
This is probably just the beginning of tributes and cover versions of Petty’s music.
