Mina Caputo (formerly known as Life Of Agony singer Keith Caputo) surprised many when she publicly came out as transgender. Now another vocalist has revealed plans to begin living as a woman: Tom Gabel from Against Me!
In the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine (which hits newsstands on May 11), Gabel revealed that he/she has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years. Eventually taking the name Laura Jane Grace, the Against Me! singer will begin the process of transition soon by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments. “I’m going to have embarrassing moments, and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind,” Gabel revealed to Rolling Stone.
Granted, Against Me! is more of a punk band than a metal one, though they have logged time on the road with Mastodon, and have a large following with both camps. Nevertheless, such an enormous transition is anything but easy (especially when you front a well-established rock band).
Mina herself has shown Gabel support via Facebook and tweets, pleading for others to “Wake people up from their deep infertile lives!” Gabel has even responded to the Life Of Agony singer, tweeting “@MinaCaputo You have been such an inspiration to me. Thank you.”
Rolling Stone’s entire piece with Gabel will hit newsstands on May 11, though an excerpt can be read online.
