This year has been a tragic one for the rock and metal community with the passing of so many musicians since January and, unfortunately, the trend is not slowing down.

Swedish drummer Oscar Karlsson, known for his work with the melodic death metal bands The Duskfall and newly reunited Gates of Ishtar passed away at the age of 39. Both bands have issued a statement regarding the tragic news.

His former bandmates at The Duskfall expressed their grief with the following message:

With heavy hearts we have to let you all know that our dear friend and long time ex-drummer of the Duskfall Oscar has passed away. Tomorrow’s show is going to be dedicated to him. Our biggest condolences to the family. Keep the heavy beat going on the other side for us Oscar…until we jam again! With huge respects.”

Gates of Ishtar also stated:

It is with much sadness and regret that we have learned that our drummer and friend Oscar Karlsson has passed away at the age of 39. Words cannot express how we feel. Oscar was a fantastic human being and a great friend and he will be dearly missed.”

Karlsson was going to be performing with Gates of Ishtar after their recent reunion in 2015 ending the 17 years break from the band. Gates of Ishtar was scheduled to perform this summer at Party San Metal Open Air in Germany on August 11th-13th in celebration of the 20 year anniversary of their album A Bloodred Path, but with this turn of events, it is unknown what will happen to their plans.

Our deepest condolences to those close to him.
