Staind frontman Aaron Lewis put out a country album, The Road, in 2012. And if this footage taken about Lynyrd Skynrd’s “Simple Man Cruise” last month is any indication, it looks like he’s gone full country. Performing a song called “Country Shovel,” it’s a cover of Staind’s “Mudshovel,” but with only the lyrics intact. It sounds absolutely nothing like the original, which was one of Staind’s more aggressive songs on their major label debut. It’s pretty odd to see Lewis performing with a band that isn’t Staind, with steel pedal guitar and everything. Also, who knew Skynrd had their own cruise? Check out the original version below.
