Smashing Pumpkins – “Eye”

I didn’t understand anything related to David Lynch in 1997, but I did understand the Smashing Pumpkins. They had already been my favorite band and the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place but when “EYE” was released as part of Lynch’s Lost Highway soundtrack – well to say I was confused would be an understatement. It was missing the fuzzed out guitar solos, the signature snare sound of Jimmy Chamberlin, and most of all-  the depth and cinematic quality exhibited throughout Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. What it did have was the signature snarl and croon of Billy Corgan so that’s what I focused on. After hearing the track over and over on local radio it began to resonate with me. Soon I understand how the arpeggiated lead line took the place of a conventional guitar riff and how the basic 606 sounding drum machine was just as iconic sounding as the raw and warm drum tones from their earlier records. Everything was in its place and stripped down so that the songwriting could be the real star. I later learned that this track was actually developed from a demo Corgan was working on for a Shaquille O’neal hip hop record. I’m sure I would have loved it no matter where it ended up.
