Since Metal Insider began presenting showcases for the CMJ Music Marathon in 2012, we’ve had some great shows, be it Prong on a boat or Byzantine’s first New York appearance in seven years. We might have outdone ourselves this year, though. We’re happy to announce that on October 22, our third annual CMJ showcase, sponsored by Spinefarm, will be taking place at The Wick in Brooklyn, NY. We’ve assembled a killer lineup that includes Incite, ’68, Black Crown Initiate and Toothgrinder. Tickets are on sale now for $12.
Led by Richie Cavalera, Phoenix, Arizona’s Incite just released their third album, Up In Hell, on September 2nd. Cavalera continues to distinguish himself from his stepfather, Sepultura/Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy’s Max Cavalera, with every release, and before the band jump on the road with 36 Crazyfists and Skinlab they’ll be road-testing some of the material from the new album at our showcase, and we’re extremely excited to have them.
Forming from the ashes of The Chariot, ’68 is the brainchild of singer/guitarist Josh Scogin. The duo is rounded out by drummer Michael McClellan, and while there are only two of them, you’d be hard-pressed to know from listening to the band’s Good Fight debut, In Humor and Sadness. The Chariot were known for their insane live shows, so it’ll be interesting to see what the duo bring as they play one of their first American shows.
Black Crown Initiate have gone from relative obscurity a year ago to a slot on the Metal Alliance tour and a record on eOne that was released earlier today. The technical progressive death metal band have fully delivered on the promise they hinted at on last year’s independently-released Song of the Crippled Bull, and if the last time you saw them was on a big stage earlier this year, now you’ll have a chance to see them perform some new music live.
Toothgrinder, currently on tour with Periphery, have just signed to Spinefarm Records. The New Jersey band have a lot in common with another Jersey band, The Dillinger Escape Plan, in that they both have the ability to be technical and spastic, but also keep a sense of hooks and melody. This might be your first chance to see the band, and it won’t be your last, but it could be the last time you’ll see them as the first band on the bill. The band’s debut EP, Schizophrenic Jubilee, will be out on November 4.
Spinefarm will have some dope giveaways from Toothgrinder, Electric Wizard and Amaranthe, and there will be more announcements in the coming days. Limited CMJ badges will be admitted at the door. You can get your tickets here.
UPDATE: And that’s not all we’re doing for CMJ. We’re also presenting a free screening of Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian’s Swearing Words in Glasgow DVD! The event will be taking place at Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn from 3-6, so you can make a day of it by heading there, seeing Ian’s hilarious spoken word, then making your way over to The Wick. It’s basically a heavy metal bar crawl!
