Since 2007, Van Halen has been happily reunited with David Lee Roth (or as happy as the Van Halen brothers can be). They’ve been touring packed arenas and finally released a new album, A Different Kind Of Truth, last year. However, there’s a reason why a Van Halen reunion with Roth seemed like it would never happen. And that reason is called the 1996 VMAs.
After putting aside their differences to record two new songs for a compilation album, all four original members of Van Halen appeared onstage together to present an award at the 1996 Video Music Awards. The appearance made many believe that Van Halen were getting back together with Roth after giving Sammy Hagar the boot. However, Roth’s onstage antics while Beck accepted his award infuriated Eddie. And as soon as you could say “Jump,” Roth was back out. However, unbeknownst to Roth, the Van Halen brothers were supposedly still auditioning singers during this “reunion,” further proving that it’s never a dull moment behind the scenes with Van Halen.
