We’re counting down to the 2024 edition of 70000 tons of Metal! This is by far one of our personal favorite metal cruises where every artist is a headliner. Metalheads from around the globe share an insane experience of four days with very little to no sleep of nonstop metal shows. From big pool deck experiences to the intimate Star Lounge, there’s something for all metalheads regardless of subgenre, and we love it all. 2023 marked a significant return for the cruise after all cruises generally faced a halt due to the pandemic. The event’s future was uncertain, but it returned, giving sixty unique artists a go. This year we saw a number of acts having their first experience on the boat to artists having some notable silver-to-gold member status returns. We managed to capture all sixty bands, and as we countdown to the 2024 edition, we will share artist spotlights from the 2023 expedition leading up to the 2024 voyage. Artist Number 47: Oceans of Slumber.
Hailing from Houston, Texas, the multifaceted act Oceans of Slumber embarked on their first-ever voyage on the metal seas in 2023. Ready to execute their progressive, doom, and vibrant styles to 3,000 metalheads from around the globe. Whether delving into the heavier style reminiscent of their early efforts, like 2016’s Winter, or navigating the stripped-down emotive-southern-folk tales showcased in 2022’s Starlight and Ash, Oceans of Slumber offer something that will likely captivate multiple audiences. One constant is their ability to leave listeners either headbanging along or standing in awe, moved to tears.
Oceans of Slumber Set 1:
Making their mark on the metal seas, Oceans of Slumber presented their first set on Day 2, January 31, 2023, at Studio B – Ice Rink Theater at 11:30 AM. The second set followed in the intimate Star Lounge at 6:00 PM on Day 3, February 1, 2023. Attending both performances, an act on our radar since 2018’s The Banished Heart, it was evident that we couldn’t pass up on either. Despite the early hour of the first set, time seemed to stand still as we got lost in their music, captivated by Cammie Beverly’s flawless vocal delivery.
The second set brought a unique challenge as lights intermittently cut off, creating an atmosphere where the photo area felt intrusive. This highlighted the band’s need for a bigger stage to project their musical delivery. However, Oceans of Slumber navigated the challenges with ease, delivering a performance that transcended the limitations of the setting. The crowd remained mesmerized, making both sets a success.
Oceans Of Slumber Set 2:
Post-70000tons, Oceans of Slumber joined forces with Moonspell for a spring tour and underwent further changes in their career, signing with Season of Mist and promising a new record with heavier styles. The group concluded 2023 with a powerful piano medley, “Poem of Fire.” Looking ahead, the band is gearing up for a spring tour supporting Lacuna Coil with a few additional headlining spots of their own throughout the trek. As the year continues to unfold, we expect to hear much more from Oceans of Slumber.
70000 tons of Metal will return on January 29th, setting sail from Miami, FL to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and back on February 2nd with another batch promising sixty bands to perform twice throughout the waves of adventure. The announcements initially moved fast and suddenly went on a halt. However, things are back on track with 59 out of 60 announced thus far.
