Metal bands performing with an orchestra might simply be a form of masturbation to Slayer’s Kerry King, but we feel that it depends on the band. However, we’ll admit that when we first heard that Sepultura were performing a special show with an orchestra, our first thoughts were “huh?” Not that we were horrified by the concept of the Brazilian thrashers performing with a full blown orchestra, but the combo isn’t necessarily a common thought.

Yet that’s exactly what Sepultura did with the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório (conducted by Jamil Maluf) last Saturday (April 16) at the Virada Cultural festival in São Paulo, Brazil. Video of them performing the classic “Refuse/Resist” together live can be seen above, while video taken from their rehearsals can be seen after the jump.

While this special collaboration isn’t necessarily something we’d ever imagine happening, it’s interesting to hear nevertheless. Plus, for a special one time performance (or so we imagine it is), it’s definitely something that hardcore fans of the group might enjoy. Either way, we have a feeling that Max Cavalera will share his feelings about Sepultura’s performance soon enough, and it probably won’t be all that favorable. More clips after the jump:
