It’s hard to imagine that Brooklyn’s Life of Agony have been around for nearly 30 years, having formed in 1989. It’s a little easier to imagine once you remember that the band’s timeline has been marked by several hiatuses, and as recently as two years ago, the band wasn’t together. The band have just announced their first album since 2005, A Place Where There’s No Pain, will be coming out in Spring of 2017, and they’ve just released a trailer for the album via Rolling Stone.

On first listen, the little Life of Agony music presented sounds very heavy, like almost back to the first album heavy. River Runs Red was an instant hardcore classic, and each subsequent album got a little more mainstream. The assemblage of riffs in this clip sound throwbacky in  the best possible way, like they could have been emanating from the stage of L’amour in 1990.

Another big transition in the band has been with their vocalist. Mina Caputo has transitioned from male to female, and this will be their first album with her as a frontwoman. As Against Me! has proven, a vocalist can transition sexes and still lead a band, and the rapturous reception the band got at their reunion shows suggests that it’ll be well received. Her voice does sound different in the clip when we hear her, but it’s still powerful and a complement to LOA’s core sound, so it’ll be interesting to hear the new album when it comes out on Napalm Records this Spring.

The band will be performing in Europe before the end of the year. You can catch those dates after the video.
