Evanescence has released a music video for their latest single “The Game Is Over.”
The video, shot via iPhone by each member at their respective homes and produced in collaboration with director P.R. Brown, finds the band expressing the mental toll shelter-in-place is having on them. Scenes of the band standing in front of walls, wearing masks, smearing lipstick on their faces, drawing x’s over their eyes and screaming are overlaid with distortion effects that make the feeling of insanity conveyed even more real.
Bassist Tim McCord said in a statement about the video’s production:
“This was by far and away the most difficult video I’ve ever been a part of, emotionally. In order to capture the raw emotion of what life really is for us these days, I had to get to some really dark places. I hope we can all view this video and heal together.”
Said vocalist Amy Lee about the song:
“This song is about being sick of the facade. The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what’s socially acceptable, or what’s not going to make you unpleasant or too ‘weird’ to be around.”
She continued:
“’The Game Is Over’ is a promise to myself and out loud that I’m going to be more of my real, inner self on the outside — not lock her up because she can’t be contained anymore. It’s also a prayer to become better, to not feel so messed up, locked up, and hurt inside.”
“The Game Is Over” is the second single from Evanescence’s upcoming fifth studio album, The Bitter Truth. The band released a video for “Wasted On You” back in April. The Bitter Truth will be their first album of all new material in nine years. It is the follow-up to 2017’s Synthesis, which found the band reimagining some of their biggest hits and a couple of new tracks into orchestral-backed pieces.
In January, the band released a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” which they recorded for the video game “Gears 5,” the latest edition of the Gears of War franchise. Lee’s voice also appears in the launch trailer for the game.
The Bitter Truth does not have a set release date yet. Instead, pieces of the album will be released incrementally throughout 2020.
Evanescence had to reschedule their European Worlds Collide tour dates with Within Temptation earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour will now take place in fall 2021, kicking off on September 8 in Zürich, Switzerland. A full list of dates can be found on the band’s website.
