Last night (7) the first-ever performance of AC/DC with Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose as their lead singer at Passeio Maritimo de Algés in Lisbon, Portugal. We’d heard what it sounded like from several muffled recordings taken from outside a rehearsal studio earlier in the week, and it seems like things went off without a hitch. As the first handful of shows with GN’R has shown, Rose has become a lot more reliable of a frontman than he had been previously, and it was no exception here. Seated on his custom throne borrowed from Dave Grohl, AR/DC played just about the same set that they’d been playing with Brian Johnson, but actually added two songs that they hadn’t been playing, “Rock and Roll Damnation” and “Riff Raff.” Hearing Rose’s signature vocals over some of the best-known riffs in rock history takes a second to get used to, but Rose sounds great, and is actually a great fit with the band. Of course, he’s not for everyone, as 7,000 attendees in Belgium opted for a refund when they found out that Johnson wouldn’t be singing for them.
