friday13th

Friday the 13th is one of the longest-running franchises there is. Spanning 12 films and 36 years, Jason Voorhees (or spoiler alert: his mom in the first one) has been sadistically killing promiscuous teens for years. With a game coming to next-gen systems this October (tentatively), a trailer for the game was revealed last week at Pax West, and it makes Slayer’s videos look like Sesame Street. Set to “XIII,” a song that Swedish glam band Crazy Lixx wrote for the game, the catchiness of the mainstream rock song is set to an extremely gory montage of Jason killing people. Spears, machetes, pitchforks, or just good old fashioned skull crushing, it doesn’t stop for the duration of the three-minute trailer. And horror purists will be excited to know that SXF designer Tom Savini worked on designing the kills in the game. We’re particularly fond of the fireplace one.

There are precedents for both a rock/metal song being featured with Friday the 13th and with the franchise having a video game. Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” was the theme song for 1986’s Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. And a Friday the 13th video game was released for the NES in 1989 and was quickly named one of the worst video games ever.

Regardless, if you’re into horror and video games and watching people die brutally violent and bloody deaths, this game could be for you. Given that over 300,000 people have watched the trailer since it was released less than a week ago, it seems like there are a lot of people interested in it. You can pre-order it here.
