Tom Maxwell “never into” older Hellyeah albums

Posted by on January 2, 2015

Hellyeah guitarist Tom Maxwell spoke with LoudWire about how a new line-up helped shaped their latest album, Blood for Blood, which came out in 2014 and debuted at #17 on the Billboard Charts.

Touching on the band’s recent line-up change, he spoke a bit on the band’s previous three albums, which he wasn’t to into:

“I got so sick and tired. I was never into the other albums. Chad and the others might disagree but I think we missed our mark completely on the second record. It’s not what I set out to do. When me and Chad formed this band, we never were going to write songs like ‘Hell of a Time’ or any of that Southern stuff. I don’t have any connection to that kind of stuff. I don’t know anything about it. It just felt dishonest for me.”

Maxwell didn’t really pull any punches later in the interview, having some choice words for the Hellyeah style over the years.

“Mind you, our past few records kind of missed that mark. It really pigeonholed us to a certain style and certain audience that weren’t useful. It was just that Southern hillbilly anthem bulls–t that I hated so much.”
