Mastodon have toured with many bands over the years, Clutch, Dethklok, Converge, Against Me! and Gojira, to name a few. One band they haven’t toured with yet is Neurosis, the Oakland standard-beareres of dark, intense music that’s one part noise rock to three parts doomy post metal. While the bands haven’t toured together, you’d be forgiven for thinking that they did, given that Neurosis frontman Scott Kelly has appeared on every one of the band’s albums for a song other than their debut, Remission. And while they still haven’t toured together, Mastodon will be bringing Kelly on the road with them when they tour Europe later this year. It’s been reported that the band will be playing a special set with Kelly, which makes sense considering they’ve got six songs together. Red Fang and their American tourmates Russian Circles will also be on the tour.
The last time Kelly and Mastodon jammed together was when the two bands shared a bill at the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta. Kelly joined them as an encore to play the then-three songs he’d guested on, Leviathan‘s “Aqua Dementia,” Blood Mountain‘s “Crystal Skull” and the title track to Crack the Skye. Presumably, their set could also include The Hunter‘s “Spectrelight,” Once More ‘Round the Sun‘s “Diamond in the Witch House” and Emperor of Sand‘s “Scorpion Breath,” all of which Kelly lends his pipes to.
