Cannibal Corpse facing opposition in Russia

Cannibal Corpse join the growing list of bands facing opposition in Russia. The band had to cancel several shows because of opposition by religious Orthodox activists.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, members of the Orthodox Union urged the prosecutor’s office to cancel the tour by sending them a statement:

“Cannibal Corpse’s work is punishable under the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code as it incites religious division and propagates people’s exceptionality, superiority or inferiority based on their attitudes about religions,” reads the address, adding that the band’s lyrics feature “death, violence, including sexual violence, as well as various kinds of sexual perversion.”

If you’re a metal band looking to tour Russia, you may want to reconsider. In recent months Behemoth was detained, Marilyn Manson shows were cancelled, and Alesana cancelled their touring plans in Finland, Russia, and Ukraine.
