5. Rage Against The Machine – April 13, 1996
Whoever at SNL decided to put the extremely liberal and outspoken rap-rock band on the same show as Forbes publisher and Republican Steve Forbes was likely asking for trouble. And that’s what they got. As the story goes, Rage Against The Machine wanted two upside down American flags to be displayed behind them during their performance. However, seconds before Forbes (who was running for president at the time) was to introduce them on the live on-air, SNL stage hands rushed the stage and tore them down before they played “Bulls On Parade.” The band was then order by NBC officials to leave the building immediately (only getting to perform one song). RATM was banned for life over the incident, though if it helps, Steve Forbes hasn’t been invited back either.
