We are saddened to report, Joshua “Nassaru” Ward, drummer and vocalist for the North Carolina death metal band Voraath, was among four victims tragically killed in a drunk driving accident on New Year’s Eve (Tuesday, December 31) in South Carolina. Ward, 37, a father of one, was known not only for his music but also for his humanitarian efforts, including delivering aid during recent floods.
The fatal crash occurred just after 9 p.m. on Cooley Bridge Road near Greenville. Ward and three others were in a 2017 Subaru SUV backing out of a driveway when a 2012 BMW sedan collided with their vehicle, forcing it off the road and into a tree. All four inside the SUV died in the crash. The BMW driver, Nicholas Shane Meeks, 32, suffered minor injuries and was arrested on multiple charges, including four counts of felony DUI involving death and driving with a suspended license. Authorities revealed Meeks had a prior DUI conviction earlier in the year.
Ward’s girlfriend and two friends were also among the victims. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support funeral costs and Ward’s young son, Kai. At the time of writing, it has reached 75% of its $20,000 goal. Our thoughts are with Ward’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time. To contribute to the GoFundMe, visit here.
The GoFundMe reads:
“Our close friend and family member, Josh Ward, passed away last night in a traffic accident. Josh dedicated his life to the music he created, the martial arts he practiced and instilled into everyone who had the privilege of training with him, and last but not least his son, Kai.
We are all devastated by this loss and were not prepared for the high cost of a funeral service. We want to give Josh the memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes.
I am currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of Josh’s funeral. All donations would go to the memorial and funeral. All remaining will be gifted to his son, Kai.”
