Portland death metal outfit Vitriol are back with their second Century Media album, Suffer & Become. Delving into the depths of darkness and despair, the band’s music execution remains a relentless pursuit in their continued evolving mastery. Led by guitarist and vocalist Kyle Rasmussen, the band pushes the boundaries of death metal, placing them on the road toward legendary bands such as Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation, and Cannibal Corpse. Their dedication to the craft is displayed throughout this near-flawless record filled with ruthless brutality.

“Shame and its Afterbirth” kicks with a classic guitar riff reminiscent of old radio shows or 70s horror films, setting the stage for a blistering onslaught of death metal. As distortions intensify, the track unfolds into a relentless display of brutality, with blast beats and harsh vocals driving the ferocity forward. With nods to legends like Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus, this track establishes the band’s prowess in the genre, punctuated by harrowing guitar interludes and relentless energy reminiscent of Fleshgod Apocalypse.

Transitioning seamlessly into “The Flowers of Sadism,” the band demonstrates their near-instant mastery of death metal with a slow, dark introduction, giving way to another onslaught of blistering riffs and unyielding intensity. “Nursing from the Mother Wound” wastes no time delivering a merciless barrage of speed and aggression, supported by melodic breakdowns and brutal rhythmic sections.

“The Isolating Lie of Learning Another” maintains the album’s punishing pace, blending sludgy tones with relentless blasting beats and intense vocals reminiscent of Cattle Decapitation. “Survival’s Careening Inertia” offers a brief respite with a soft acoustic interlude before plunging back into the depths of terrorizing beats and technical mastery.

“Weaponized Loss” and “Flood of Predation” continue to showcase the band’s ferocious energy and catchy vibes, while “Locked in Thine Frothing Wisdom” ramps up the intensity with complete oblivion and ruthless screams. “I am Every Enemy” offers a brief slowdown, allowing for a moment of breath amidst the chaos. The record culminates into a brutal conclusion with “He Will Fight Savagely.” The track moves with a unique guitar solo, adding depth and diversity that naturally solidifies the band’s place among death metal greats.

Suffer & Become highlights the mastery of Vitriol’s craft and their commitment to delivering pure, unfiltered death metal. With remnant styles ranging from Cannibal Corpse to Fleshgod Apocalypse, these death metallers have made tremendous strides in the scene. This merciless record is just a continuation of their excellence, hard work, and dedication.
