Hard work, dedication, and the commitment to keeping metal alive are qualities that K.K. Downing and I share. Despite the rumors and speculations surrounding Downing’s departure from Judas Priest in 2011, a band he had been with since their inception with Rocka Rolla (1974) up until Nostradamus (2008), it’s evident that the split wasn’t something to easily overcome within a day. Downing marked his triumphant return in 2021 by introducing all to his new project KK’s Priest and the release of their debut album, Sermons of the Sinner. KK’s Priest, comprised of former Judas Priest members Downing (guitar) and Tim “Ripper” Owens (vocals), alongside A.J. Mills (guitar), Tony Newton (bass), and Sean Elg (drums), invites us to explore their latest album, The Sinner Rides Again, released on Friday (29th) via Napalm Records.

We won’t dwell on exhaustive comparisons between KK’s Priest and Judas Priest. They are distinct entities, expanding their respective audiences by delivering the classic heavy metal sound that underscores this sub-genre’s iconic and untouchable nature. The Sinner Rides Again stands out as a robust, anthemic record featuring powerful guitar solos, especially notable in “Pledge Your Souls,” contributing to the album’s mastery of heavy metal. The high production quality and pristine sound quickly become apparent, weaving in influences from heavy metal giants like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and, of course, Judas Priest. KK’s Priest adds their touch of originality, complemented by Owens’ powerful vocals, admired by his fanbase for an extended period. The album, an enjoyable forty-minute ride, effortlessly prompts listeners to hit the repeat button. Key tracks include “Sons of The Sentinel,” “One More Shot At Glory,” “Keeper of the Graves,” “Pledge Your Souls,” and the final track, “Wash Away Your Sins,” which stands out as our favorite. Overall, The Sinner Rides Again will take KK’s Priest’s listeners into an enjoyable head-banging frenzy, earning its place as a top-notch record for 2023.
