Metallica surprised all when they showed up at The Independent in San Francisco California and played a show. We have videos down below, included is a social post from a Bay Area reported who attended the show. Tickets were on sale for $19.81 a nod to the bands birthday year of 1981. This is also marked the 30th anniversary of the 1991 release Metallica: The Black Album The remastered Deluxe Box Set is available now!

It has been 738 days since Metallica played a live show! That all changed last night!

The thrash metal legends wrote on their socials on Thursday,

“Hey! Gonna let you in on a little secret .. We’re playing tonight at The Independent in downtown SF. Grab a $20 bill and get your ass to the box office right now! Proof of vaxx is required to get a wristband and it’s gonna sell out fast. One ticket per person, cash only!”

The Independent has been requiring proof of vaccination since they reopened in July, so fans needed that, a mask, and 20 bucks to get in. 400 lucky fans were treated to this set:

01) Whiplash
02) Ride The Lightning
03) The Memory Remains
04) Now That We’re Dead
05) Holier Than Thou
06) No Leaf Clover
07) Sad But True
08) Moth Into Flame
09) Fade To Black
10) For Whom The Bell Tolls
11) Creeping Death
12) One
13) Master Of Puppets

14) Battery
15) Fuel
16) Seek & Destroy

Metallica will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a pair of hometown shows for its fan club members on December 17 and December 19 at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Metallica will be back on stage on Thursday September 23, and Sunday September 26 at Louder Than Life.
