Los Angeles-based dark melodic metal outfit Witherfall has recently unveiled their latest single, “Where Do I Begin?” The track is a glimpse into their upcoming fourth full-length effort, Sounds of the Forgotten, set to release on May 31st via the band’s own label, DeathWave Records. Stepping away from the classic industry structure, the group has decided to unchain themselves to do it all independently, where, ultimately, the music will be the deciding factor.

Unlike the prior two singles, “Ceremony of Fire” and “Insidious,” “Where Do I Begin?” takes on a Scorpions-esque ballad, presenting a somber and anthemic tone highlighting the band’s versatility, strengths, and powerful vocal dynamics. As the song progresses, it delves into the signature Witherfall sound, incorporating Nevermore-styled melodies.

Frontman Joseph Michael’s vocal mastery becomes evident, providing a deeper understanding of why he assumed the role of the new singer for Sanctuary following the passing of Warrel Dane. The emotional ballad segment further adds depth to the track, making it a standout piece that is likely to have solidified the upcoming album a place on year-end lists.

The group commented:

“Our upcoming album ‘Sounds Of The Forgotten’ is our defining statement, a testament to what we in Witherfall hold sacred in the Rock and Metal Zeitgeist. We delve into many forms on ‘Sounds Of The Forgotten’ and one of the truly lost art-forms becoming ever more rare is the ‘Power Ballad’. Forgoing cheesy and sometimes hallow tropes about unrequited love we chose to write about our love of music. This ballad is an ode for anyone that finds themselves on their journey (whatever it may be) and fearing that their dream may be slipping away from them. Where do i begin? is a call to find your passion again and revisit those initial reasons for all of your sacrifices.”

Sounds of Forgotten takes the band back to their roots, reminiscent of 2017’s Nocturnes and Requiems. However, it also signals a departure from the industry structure. Examining the cover art by Blake Armstrong (known for works with In Flames, Megadeth, Kataklysm, etc.) offers insight into the album’s content.

The group is renowned for the meticulous crafting of each album cover, where details, including the choice of color, are carefully considered. In this case, the color purple is chosen to convey themes ranging from distress to ambition, aligning with the band’s suggestion that these themes resonate throughout the album.
