It feels like about 10,000 days since we’ve heard any new music from Tool (puns!), but today yet another surprise supergroup popped up featuring not only Tool’s Danny Carey, but Brent Hinds from Mastodon as well. Called Legend of The Seagullmen, Dimitri Coats of OFF! is rumored to be involved as well. Jimmy Hayward, who directed Jonah Hex, which Mastodon did the soundtrack for, serves as the project’s producer.  The band arrives fully formed, too, with two songs already available for download. It seems to be a nautical-themed band, with the two songs available called “The Deep Sea Diver” and “Ships Wreck.”

At this point, it’s hard to tell whether this is a full-on project, or just a one-off. Going back well over three years, there appears to have been a short film made for the band, and while Hinds was involved in it, there was no talk of him or Carey being in the  band, and the film was only in the planning stages back then. Will there be more music? Will they tour with Giraffe Tongue Orchestra? Neither Tool or Mastodon’s website says anything about the project, so at this point in time, it seems to be a wait and see thing. The two songs, which are great, by the way, are available for free download at the band’s site.
