Earlier tonight, Metallica kicked off their 2014 world tour by premiering a new song titled “The Lords of Summer” in Bogota, Colombua. Their “Metallica by Request” tour was designed to have space for one new song of their choosing, with the remaining 17 chosen for each show by ticket holders.
The song sounds like an extension of Death Magnetic, which isn’t a bad thing. The 8 1/2 minute song has a few tempo changes, with a chorus that sounds a bit like “Harvester of Sorrow.” For the most part, it’s a pretty upbeat song that’s unmistakably Metallica, with a long instrumental midsection. It’ll be interesting to see if Metallica keeps playing the same new song throughout their tour or whether they’ll continue to road-test songs from their in-the-works 10th studio album.
