06) Satyricon with Nocturno Culto Performing Nemesis Divina

Satyr – Vocals and Guitar

Frost – Drums

Nocturno Culto (aka Kveldulv) – Guitar

Anders Odden – Bass

Gildas Le Pape – Guitar

For those of you too young to remember, yes, Nocturno Culto played on Nemesis Divinia. One of Satyicon’s greatest records. This tour, of course, would also have to feature Nemesis Divina period corpse paint. Anders Odden and Gildas Le Pape weren’t on that record but they are easily the best guitar and bass combo Satyricon has featured live.

05) Gorgoroth with Gaahl and King ov Hell

Gaahl – Vocals

Infernus – Guitar

King Ov Hell – Bass

Frost – Drums

Telloch – Guitar

This is the Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam lineup. And while all of Gorgoroth’s releases have been great, this particular record features some of the best songwriting with “Prosperity and Beauty,” “God Seed,” and “Carving a Giant.”

04) Dimmu Borgir with ICS Vortex, Hellhammer and Mustis

Shagrath – Vocals

ICS Vortex – Bass and Vocals

Galder – Guitar and constipated facial expressions

Silenoz – Guitar

Mustis – Keyboards

Hellhammer – Drums

Look, when ICS Vortex and Mustis left, this band went way downhill. Yes, Abrahadabra is a serviceable record (largely due to Snowy Shaw’s input), but this band needs Vortex’s clean vocals to get it back to where it was. Mustis was an incredible talent. The current incarnation of Dimmu is rather plain and boring. Hellhammer, of course, is one of the greatest living drummers ever.

03) Mercyful Fate circa 1996

King Diamond – Vocals

Hank Shermann – Guitar

Michael Denner – Guitar

Sharlee D’Angelo – Bass

Snowy Shaw – Drums

While not considered “the classic lineup,” Snowy Shaw is the best drummer this band ever had. Shermann and Denner still perform together in Denner/Shermann along with Snowy Shaw. Timi Hansen, of course, is the original bass player but Timi hasn’t picked up a bass in decades. Logistically, this can happen fairly easily.

02) Megadeth with Marty Friedman

Dave Mustaine – Vocals and Guitar

Dave Ellefson – Bass

Marty Friedman – Guitar

Shawn Drover – Drums

Of course, Nick Menza would be the ideal drummer here and it’s unfortunate Nick is no longer with us. While Marty Friedman might be a legend in Japan, let’s face it, Rust In Peace was his greatest work and nothing he does as a solo artist will ever top it.
