Metal Inside(r) Home Quarantine is Metal Insider’s new column during this time of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We asked artists five questions on what’s been keeping them busy ranging from their favorite movies, food they’ve been eating, music they’ve been listening to and more. We caught up with Tia Carrera’s Jason Morales as he went into great detail (with photos) on what he’s been up to this entire time.
What have you been doing to pass time during Quarantine?
Man we’ve been pretty busy over here. My wife and I Were commissioned by a couple local businesses to make masks for their employees. I think we will have turned out almost 500 by the end of the month. The word of mouth has gone pretty crazy so it’s kind of turned into a decent earning opportunity. I personally have not touched my guitar once but have been skateboarding a lot. I’m sure I’ll bust out the ol six string soon and write some riffs just haven’t been feeling it lately.
Have you been listening to any music or have any playlists worth checking out?
Haven’t really been checking too much new stuff out but playing a lot of records while making the masks. Chill stuff like Bob Dylan. Oh man the Get Carter soundtrack is dope. The one from the original movie. I’ve also been working in the studio a bit. Just mastered a record for a local band called Miles per Hour and have a few bands that I’m currently mixing tunes for, Black Cutlass, Cruel Summer and Auntie. Again all local Austin bands.
A lot of people have been spending this time cooking including making their own bread, what food have you been prepping during this time?
We do a lot of cooking normally here at the house so yea we’ve had a lot of good meals. Last night we made tri tip steak with some sort of chimichurri sauce that was amazing. We made a loaf of white bread, zucchini and banana bread. A lot of pasta with Garlic and olive oil. Roasted chicken and BBQ is a must. We’ve got a killer backyard with a mini ramp so the grill and chill is in full effect here. Our Garden is not really producing much at the moment, basically herbs and greens so we’ll add those to our dishes quite a bit.
In terms of entertainment, what movies, TV shows, books, or games have been keeping you busy?
As far as reading material, Thrasher magazine is always good. My wife is reading a book about the history of France through food so I get to hear about that a lot. I’ll begrudgingly admit that I’m a TV whore so I’ll watch just about anything. Devs was cool. Watched one of my favorite movies the other night. Blade Runner Final cut. And I’ve been playing a lot of Madden 2020 on PS4. I can see my wife’s eyes rolling to the back of her head as I write this. My kid is hoarding the Xbox in his room so I don’t get to play my favorite game Skate3 at all.
What advice do you have for your fans in isolation during this time?
I would say if possible definitely get out and exercise. Skating has saved my ass during this. I understand the Texas lockdown is not as strict as some other places but exercise is key to staying sane. If you are cooped up with family members, practice patience. It’s really easy to blow things out of proportion due to the frustrations of lockdown. I feel like I have it pretty well and I even find myself getting overly angry at shit from time to time. Also it’s great to stay informed but try not to spin out on the news or Facebook if you can. Definitely ignore our President’s daily briefings that dip shit and his cabinet make no sense and have got to go!!! Apply for your mail in ballot and vote against Trump in November. This is key. We need to take our country back from that fucking idiot in the White House. Try to follow the science of this situation as best as you can, which means wear the masks, wash your hands A lot , practice the distancing. Do your best not to spread your germs around so we can kick this thing’s ass and all get back out and Rock sooner rather than later. Cheers y’all.
Tia Carrera’s new album, Tried and True, is scheduled to arrive on June 12th. Pre-order here.
