Countdown to 2025: 42 Days

SOOOOOOON, the famous word for 70000tons of Metal cruisers know to love and hate. And one thing you learn is announcements are always unpredictable. After experiencing the 2024 edition to its fullest capability, we captured all sixty-two bands, bringing back our Artist Spotlight, our countdown to the 2025 voyage, leaving on January 30 in Miami, setting sail to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and returning on February 3, 2025. Round 12, the 2024 experience, took place from January 29 – February 2, sailing from Miami to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, on the Freedom of the Seas.

70000tons 2024 Round 12: ARTIST 12 of 62 Crypta

Brazilian death metal unit Crypta have come a long way since forming in 2019. After parting ways with Nervosa, bassist/vocalist Fernanda Lira and drummer Luana Dametto set out to create a sound distinct from their thrash metal roots, carving their identity in death metal with 2021’s Echoes of the Soul and 2023’s Shades of Sorrow.

Crypta and Nervosa notably performed on the 2024 70000tons of Metal cruise, with each band showcasing their stylistic evolution. Despite the split, it’s evident that the divergence led to the creation of two relentless, all-female forces in metal. Witnessing both bands aboard the cruise was an extraordinary experience, but Crypta’s performance stood out as a highlight.

Unfortunately, we were only able to make it to one. While the first set gave a more intimate setting on Day 1, January 29, 2024, at the intimate Star Lounge at 6:45 PM, we ended up with the most brutal time to see them on the biggest stage the cruise has to offer: on Day 3, January 31, 2024, at 5:15 AM on the Pool Deck. Given the late (or early) hour, one wouldn’t expect such a big turnout. However, this was Crypta, and many metalheads on the boat were there to see them. It was a good turnout, considering the late hour. Fernanda Lira led the band with such intensity, countless facial expressions, and an overall unique brutal style where the Nervosa/Crypta split made complete sense.

Making it evident Lira needed to shine on her own terms, forming a freedom of her unique musical execution, and it worked. This was one of the strongest, most brutal sets on the stage, all led by strong women within the metal scene. If you haven’t seen Crypta, what are you waiting for?

What’s next for Crypta?

Crypta have officially wrapped up their 2024 touring cycle, and what a year it’s been! Relentlessly on the road, the band brought their ferocious energy to stages worldwide, including as part of Hatebreed’s 30th Anniversary Tour. Their hunger to share their music live across the globe seems to be unstoppable. Hopefully, their unstoppable momentum will continue into 2025!

What is the Artist Spotlight?

Well, it’s more than a review of their performance; as 70000tons goes, each band is a headliner, and we treat each one as such, giving them their own spread, discussing who they are and what they’ve been up to since the cruise. Each spotlight coincides with any updates from 70000tons organizers (if any), leading to days before setting sail. An extensive coverage like no other.

What does 70000tons 2025 look like?

There’s a reason why we want to keep going until we can’t. With at least 120 promised shows, bands performing twice within four days, including an All-Star Jam, Belly Flop Contest, Shore Excursions, meet and greets, clinics, workshops, pool girls and boys, hot tub mosh pits, cosplay madness, and much more. 2025, round 13 of 70000tons of Metal will bring cruisers back on the Independence of the Seas, setting sail on January 30 from Miami to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and returning to Miami on February 3, 2025.
