Any Pantera fan knows that the band took their name from the Italian sports car the DeTomaso Pantera, and it’s Italian for “panther.” However, it seems that Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church of Tempe, AZ isn’t necessarily a fan. In fact, he calls the band Satanic, along with Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. Blabbermouth has uncovered a sermon promoting his documentary, Marching to Zion. And while the film, from it’s YouTube description, appears to be decidedly essentially an anti-Jewish screed, he focuses on metal bands in an excerpt from the sermon in a clip called “The Jews and their Lies” in which he denounces the Talmud, a Jewish book of learning and tradition.:

“Let me just point out that The Talmud is blasphemous of our Lord Jesus Christ. ‘Cause, keep in mind, this was written hundreds of years after Christ. Let me just give you some of the blasphemy of The Talmud. First of all, The Talmud calls Jesus ‘the son of Pantera‘ at least eight times. So eight times it refers to Lord Jesus Christ as ‘the son of Pantera.’ You say, ‘Well, who’s Pantera?’ Well, it’s not the metal band from the eighties. But let me tell you something. When I’m done explaining who Pantera is, you’ll realize how satanic that metal band is for calling themselves that. Why are they named that? It’s blasphemous name. A lot of the rock and roll uses a lot of satanic… Look at some of the names of some of these metal [bands]… Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Pantera…”

Basically, Anderson is just trying to promote his film, but it’s not like he’s going to win any sensitivity awards. We call him “insane” in the headline, but not because he thinks Pantera worship the devil. No, we’re talking about a guy that recently claimed that if gays were executed, AIDS could be wiped out by Christmas. So after offending every gay person and gay rights activist, he might as well move on to metal fans. And hey, at least he knew the band started in the ’80s. Anderson’s mention of metal bands begins at about the 21:45 mark.
