Next week, New York will be overtaken by hundreds of bands from around the world, even more college students from the United States and Canada and countless music industry executives for the annual CMJ Music Marathon. If you’ve looked at Metal Insider in the last week or so, you know that we have a pair of events happening on Wednesday, October 22, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re in or around New York, you’ll have plenty of metal things to do. Anyone that buys a badge will get to attend the convention as well as have entry in to many of the night shows and showcases, so it’s definitely worth looking into if you’re interested in either learning about how radio and the music industry works or seeing live music. Here’s a day by day breakdown of what’s happening, but check back, as we’ll be updating this as we hear about more things happening.

Inter Arma
King Parrot
So Hideous
Lazer/Wulf
Moon Tooth
The metal shows start off on a high note at The Acheron in Brooklyn. In fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s the second best showcase of the week! Metalsucks and Metal Injection have put together a killer lineup with one of Richmond’s heaviest bands headlining, as well as Australia grindcore merchants King Parrot, NYC’s So Hideous, the Lady Gaga-approved Lazer/Wulf and new band Moon Tooth.
Tickets are $10, and you can get them here. A limited amount of CMJ badges will be admitted.
The Syndicate Conflict of Interest Party
Brooklyn Bowl
61 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn NY
Doors 6pm, show 8pm
Cold War Kids
Special guest
Aurora
Chief Scout
We’ll preface this by saying that this is not a metal party. It is, however, the annual CMJ kickoff party for Metal Insider‘s parent company The Syndicate. So while the majority of the metal people will be at the Acheron, if you’re looking for something to do that’s a little less noisy and will allow you to network with music industry execs while bowling, you can find out more information about that here.

Metal Insider CMJ 2014 Showcase
The Wick
260 Meserole Street, Brooklyn NY
8pm-12am
This is it right here, the centerpiece of your week. We’re incredibly proud of this four-band bill, led by Incite, whose third album Up In Hell was recently released on Minus HEAD Records. Richie Cavalera is really staring to put some distance between his band and the legacy of his stepfather, Max Cavalera. ’68, a two-pice led by The Chariot vocalist Josh Scogin, hasn’t played many American shows yet, and The Wick will be a great place to take in their insane live show. Black Crown Initiate are another band that’s made a name for themselves, via inclusion on the Metal Alliance tour earlier this year, which led to their signing with eOne. And Toothgrinder doesn’t even have a release out yet! That’s coming next month, via their Schizophrenic Jubilee EP, but you’ll get to hear songs from the band, who just recently got off the road with Periphery. The show is sponsored by Spinefarm, who will have some goodies for everyone. $12, with limited CMJ badges accepted.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23
Film screening: Metalhead
NYU Kimmel Center, Room 802 Shorin S
2pm
This Icelandic drama won raves when it came out earlier this year, and while it won’t be released in America until next year, this is an exclusive screening of the film. When a farming accident tragically ends a life, the boy’s sister deals with her older brother’s death by assuming the metal lifestyle that he lived. Partially inspired by the Norwegian church burnings of the 1990s, the movie is filled out by a soundtrack of ’80s and ’90s metal.

This isn’t a CMJ showcase, but it is a killer bill and an opportunity to see one of the better Fall touring lineups. It’s also the first opportunity you’ll have to see Arch Enemy with their new vocalist, Alissa White-Gluz, and pick up their limited edition 7″ with the band covering “Breaking the Law.”
Saint Vitus Bar

Virus
Krallice
Sannhet
Couch Slut
Norwegian metal trio Virus has never played the United States before, and their only scheduled shows are two nights at Saint Vitus. They’ve been described as a cross between Voivod and the Talking Heads, so it should be a pretty interesting couple of evenings. They’ve lined up an impressive undercard for each night, with Krallice, Sannhet and Couch Slut playing.
