The concept of creating a musical based on the catalog of one band or artist is not unusual. In fact, ABBA’s Mamma Mia, Billy Joel’s Movin’ Out, and Queen’s We Will Rock You have been big hits. And even Rock Of Ages, which uses songs from 80’s hair metal bands like Poison, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister and many others, has gain a great amount of success (at least enough to warrant a movie adaptation). With that said, though, you’d think that a musical using Black Sabbath songs would never exist, right? Well, according to Tony Iommi himself, apparently someone did have that idea.
In a recent interview with VH1 Classic Rock Nights, the guitarist reportedly revealed that the members of Sabbath had actually been approached a few years back about possibly creating a musical based on the band’s songs. Iommi further revealed the following:
“I remember years ago when we were approached to do a Black Sabbath [musical], like We Will Rock You, many years ago. The chap who’d done The Who, I forgot his name now, who’d done Tommy, the producer, he wanted to do something with us many years ago. We never did, because we thought, ‘Oh, that’s a weird idea.’ Of course now, he was way ahead of his time.”
Though the band turned down the idea of a Black Sabbath musical then, that doesn’t mean we may never see “Iron Man” performed by a Broadway chorus. When asked if he’d ever agree to do it now, Iommi replied “Well, I don’t know. Maybe. We might be jumping on the bandwagon then at that point.”
We wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to seeing a Black Sabbath musical actually come to life. However, we hope to see the original Sabbath lineup reunite before Iron Man: The Musical ever hits Broadway. Though depending on which update from Iommi you read, a Broadway musical might have a better chance at happening first (at least before a new Sabbath album).
In other Black Sabbath news, the band’s website has been updated with the band’s logo and the date 11.11.11 below. This would hint that some sort of announcement will be made on November 11 (next Friday). As to what will be revealed on 11/11/11, though, is unclear.
