Yesterday, Phil Anselmo posted a video taken backstage last month at the Soundwave Festival in Sydney, Australia. In the minute-long clip, Anselmo, GWAR’s Dave Brockie and Brent Purgason, Satyricon’s Satyr and Frost and Volbeat’s Michael Poulson headbang to Slayer’s “Angel of Death” in Down’s dressing room. There’s nothing that special about it initially, in fact, it’s a completely ordinary moment. Everyone reading this has probably headbanged to a Slayer song with their friends. But seeing this casual moment of joy and camaraderie amongst friends bonding through metal is especially sad knowing that Brockie’s no longer with us. It’s compounded even more knowing that the architect of that riff, Jeff Hanneman, also isn’t with us more. You can tell that moments like this had happened many times before, and likely would have happened again had the GWAR frontman’s life not been cut short on Sunday. As sad as it is though, it serves as a celebration of Brockie and his life. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that didn’t love the guy, and this little slice of life sums that up perfectly.
