During a recent show in Philadelphia, PA, guitar legend Marty Friedman invited a fan from the crowd up on stage to take part in a back and forth shred fest. It turns out that this very lucky fan’s name is Christian and he spoke to Ultimate-Guitar about the experience:
“Marty’s been a major influence for me as a guitarist since I started playing at 15. I just turned 24 and still feel in awe when I hear him play. I never thought I’d see him live in the U.S. because he lives in Japan now.
“When I heard about his tour, I instantly bought a ticket. The concert was at the North Star Bar in Philadelphia 9/12/15. I went with my friend and told him how amazing it would be to jam with Marty. We both laughed it off, and realized it’s a nice dream but unlikely to ever happen.
“Well it did. I was near the stage when Marty asked if anyone would like to jam. I spazzed out, shouted, threw my hands up. I’m 6 ft tall, and I guess it helped in getting Marty’s attention. His guitar tech handed me a guitar and before I knew it, Marty began jamming. I was stirred up with emotion, as you can imagine.
“Once I started playing, I forgot about the screaming fans and the blinding lights. It was just me and Marty exchanging leads and it was awesome. It also helped that I loved the groovy baseline. I really got into it and I think it shows! When it was over, I felt on cloud 9. Marty was the nicest guy.
“As talented as Marty is, I was most impressed by his graciousness. How many guitar gods jam with their fans during their concert? I can’t think of any, can you?”
Marty is currently still touring the US with Exmortus with there are ten remaining dates. Check out the video below and cry because it’s not you on stage with him.
