Good news: Ben Weinman will be returning to the guitar after recovering from a broken wrist (and a brief stint reading Revolver magazine at the side of the stage during at Orion Fest). This means fans can be reassured that The Dillinger Escape Plan will be playing in full force as they headline the Summer Slaughter tour along with prog stars Periphery and Animals as Leaders.
Weinman reveals how the wonders of medical technology were able to enable him to return to full playing form:
“When the Doctor told me I broke my wrist and that this particular bone doesn’t typically heal my heart sunk. Our record had just come out and we were just getting started with its promotional cycle. I would not let this stop me. I immediately set up an appointment with the best hand surgeon in NY.
I told him I had to play guitar again in a month. He said, ‘ok ‘I’ll put a screw in your wrist.’ Two weeks after surgery they took my stitches and cast off and I started playing guitar again. Definitely not the most pleasant experience, but now I almost feel back to myself.
I have to say that I have a new found appreciation for playing and I can’t wait to see you all this summer. Now, back to my rehab.”
Getting a screw inserted into your bones just to play for your fans is some serious dedication on Weinman’s part. Now he can help the band create situations in which his fans break their bones via circle pits during the tour. His broken wrist caused the band to cancel some European dates so he could get the necessary surgery to play Summer Slaughter, which kicks off on July 19 in San Francisco.
