sageSo far, the Winter Olympics have been concentrated more on Sochi, Russia and how backwards things are there than the actual games. Things are starting to change, though. 20 year-old Park City, Utah resident Sage Kotsenburg won the first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics in snowboard slopestyle on Saturday, pulling off a 1620 Japan Air Mute Grab on his first attempt.

What does he attribute his medal-winning performance to? When going over his routine that day to Today, he woke up before 7am, then listened to Judas Priest, Metallica and Slayer. “I just started bumping that stuff and getting into a nice mindset for the day, he says.” He followed that up with breakfast and winning a gold medal in a crazy jump that he’d never attempted before. It’s even more insane when hearing that capturing the Olympic qualifying even in California last month was his first win since he’d been 11. So congrats to Sage, a gold metalist. Yeah, we spelled it that way on purpose.
