In a heartfelt statement late this evening (20th), Lars Ulrich shared the passing of his father, Torben Ulrich, at the age of 95. The Metallica drummer expressed gratitude for his father’s 95 years filled with adventures, unique experiences, and a profound Danish contrarian attitude. Torben Ulrich, born on October 4, 1928, was a multifaceted individual – a tennis pro, filmmaker, musician, poet, journalist, and painter.  Torben Ulrich gained recognition in metal circles in 2004 when he appeared in Metallica’s documentary Some Kind Of Monster. He showcased his candidness when advising Lars during a scene discussing a proposed track for the St Anger album. Torben, a seasoned musician, performer, writer, choreographer, and composer, continued his musical journey. Notably, at the age of 92, he achieved the remarkable feat of unveiling a new album, Oakland moments: cello, voice, reuniting (rejoicing) with composer and musician Lori Goldston. Tonight, the metal community mourns the loss of Torben Ulrich, celebrating a life rich in creativity, diversity, and wisdom.

Lars Ulrich issued the following statement:

“Torben Ulrich: 1928-2023

95 years of adventures, unique experiences, curiosity, pushing boundaries, challenging the status quo, tennis, music, art, writing… and quite a bit of Danish contrarian attitude.

Thank you endlessly!

I love you, dad…

– Lars”
