Eric Carlson (aka Sickie Wifebeater), founding member and lead guitarist of the controversial punk band The Mentors has passed away. The 66-year-old lost his battle with cancer on Sunday (29th). Carlson co-founded the Mentors in 1976 in Seattle alongside Steve Broy (Dr. Heathen Scum) and Eldon Hoke (El Duce). Known for their provocative lyrics, shock rock stage presence, and satirical chauvinism, the Mentors gained notoriety for pushing boundaries in freedom of speech and influencing the shock rock genre. Their provocative act ultimately led to the infamous “Parental Advisory” labels.

The band announced Carlson’s passing on social media, stating:

“It’s with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Eric Carlson. Eric was fondly known as Sickie Wifebeater, a founding member of the musical trio Mentors. He  passed this evening 11:43 est, succumbing to a year long battle with cancer. Eric will be missed by those who loved him. His musical legacy will out live us all.
REST IN POWER SICKIE!
