Why did we ever doubt that Mike Portnoy wouldn’t have a hard time keeping himself busy with awesome projects? Since leaving Dream Theater and parting ways with Avenged Sevenfold, Portnoy has teamed up with an prog all-star lineup for an as-yet-named group and has even brought back his Beatles tribute band Yellow Matter Custard. But fans wanting to see Portnoy explore some heavier realms of music might just get their wish, as Portnoy has revealed that he is working on a new project with Symphony X singer Russell Allen.
Portnoy revealed the dream power/prog metal collaboration via his Twitter account, saying the following:
“VERY excited about a new project I’m working on w one my fav singers in the world: my bro, Sir Russell Allen. Wait ’till you hear this shit!!!”
No word on what the collaboration actually entails and who else will be playing in said project. The pairing should be no surprise though, seeing as how Portnoy’s former band has toured with Symphony X before and that the two are obviously friends. We’ll keep you updated when more is revealed.
