As soon as we read that Mastodon would be teaming up with the Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes for one of the Adult Swim singles, we knew it’d be a little offbeat at the very least. And “Atlanta,” which becomes available for free download today, delivers on that count. In fact, it’s very reminiscent of another song that Haynes sang on, Ministry’s “Jesus Built My Hotrod.” It’s a fast, straight ahead punk song with no progginess whatsoever featuring Brent Hinds shouting out things about Atlanta while the rest of the band plays. When Haynes comes in after a break with his verse, which sounds like it’s being sung/shouted through a megaphone, the Ministry comparison becomes even more apt.
