On November 13th, Montage of Heck, the HBO documentary about the life and death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, will be released on DVD and Blu-ray. While the doc is hard to watch at times (especially towards the end, when Kurt is clearly not doing well), it’s still one of the most engaging documentaries in recent memory, due to the mountains of home movies and unreleased drawings and writings that Brett Morgen was given access to.
Out of that, there will be a companion soundtrack released on the same day as the documentary. Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, will feature 13 songs (more on the vinyl and deluxe box). One of the most moving moments of the documentary is hearing Cobain’s version of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her.” Like “Sappy,” it’s sung rather than screamed, and in a lower register than what we’re used to from Cobain. The rawness of the cover is haunting. It will be on the soundtrack, and is streaming below. That, as well as “Sappy” will be released as a 7″ single on November 20th, which you can order here.
