The first taste of Dream Theater’s double-disc concept album, The Astonishing, has arrived a little sooner than many thought it might. Just one day after revealing the track listing of the album, the band have given listeners “The Gift of Music” via Rolling Stone. It’s a pretty upbeat, positive song, and the proggy ambition of the song doesn’t really rear it’s head until the last minute and half, which is instrumental. The band used a full orchestra on the album, which you can hear some of on this track. In an interview, John Petrucci says that the band is open to doing a one-off performance of The Astonishing with a full orchestra and choir, but they won’t be doing that when they play the album in its entirety next year.
The Astonishing will be released on January 29th on Roadrunner.
