In 2008, when former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted left Voivod after a six-year stint in the band, they brought back their original bassist, Jean-Yves Theriault, aka Blacky. Now he’s out of the band again. There’s no word on why he’s no longer in the band, but he’s confirmed that he won’t be playing with them in Quebec this Saturday (12) at Festival Jonquiere En Musique. After reuniting with the band at Heavy MTL in 2008, Blacky toured with them and also played on their most recent album, last year’s Target Earth. There’s no word on who will be playing with the band tomorrow, but the band released the following statement via Facebook:
It saddens us to announce that Voivod will no longer be performing live with Blacky.
Jean-Yves has decided to leave the band for his own personal reasons.
We wish him all the best.
Voivod will carry on.
That statement also leaves open the possibility that he may play on the band’s studio albums. Either way, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
