Dutch progressive metal veterans Textures are back with Genotype, their long-awaited new album, out today (23rd). Serving as a conceptual counterpart to 2016’s Phenotype, Genotype isn’t a continuation so much as a reset, written entirely from scratch and self-produced after nearly a decade of silence. To mark the long-awaited release, Textures teamed up with Metal Insider to share an exclusive track-by-track guide.
VOID
Void is a sonic landscape that preludes the album like a wingsuit plunge from a Himalayan mountain range.
At The EDGE OF WINTER
The videoclip single of the album is a lot darker than people think it is. During the last 1,5 minutes the ‘wayward friend’ takes you on a journey into the darker shadows.
MEASURING THE HEAVENS
A big part of songwriting is to tease the listener to a climax as long possible. In this case Textures builds up tension for 6 minutes long to finally kick you in the nuts and leaves you naked in the desert with you calculator still in hand. Measuring the heavens may not be for mortals.
NAUTICAL DUSK
The one song that Textures could have easily chosen as main single, but was rejected because the intro was too long. Well….for you who take a chance on Nautical….enjoy the ramping up to epic headbanging.
VANISHING TWIN
Hammering drums building a plaform for the vocals, synths and guitar flowing over, underneath and besides each other. Like dolphins crossing through open waters. Before finally bursting out in a back breaking halftime riff. Probably the most emotional track of the album.
CLOSER TO THE UNKNOWN
Textures 2.0 right in your face.
A SEAT FOR THE LIKE MINDED
Like a drawing from Escher this track creates its own universe while listening. Up can be down. Right can be left. But remember: the earth can’t be flat.
WALLS OF THE SOUL
The grand finale of the album. A modern prog.track built on traditional prog. tradition: Like a saga leading through all dimensions of Inception but finishing off exactly where the story began.
