Well, now we here at Metal Insider can finally say we’ve heard a song by boy band One Direction. Reportedly, Def Leppard is looking into legal action after hearing the title track to the group’s third album, Midnight Memories, alleging that it sounds like the band’s massive 1987 hit “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” UK tabloid The Mirror reports sources close to Def Leppard saying “Music lawyers will routinely scour hits like this one to see if there is any evidence that a band has either copies of cleverly mimicked a Def Leppard song. These cases can often take weeks to sort out because we are not talking about peanuts here – the 1D album is selling millions and if the title track goes out as a single it will generate even more money. Everyone is staying silent at this stage but it’s clear the two songs sound alike – which has been enough for Def Leppard’s aides to pose questions to their legal team.”
Of course, UK tabloids aren’t particularly known for fact checking, and anyone claiming “sources” instead of backing it up with real facts or names suggests this could just be a journalist putting two and two together to make a story. When the song started, we didn’t see the similarity. Then the chorus happened, and it pretty much features the same guitar chords and progressions as Leppard’s hit from their multi-platinum Hysteria. Do you think they sound alike? Check out 1D’s song above and Leppard’s below, but if you haven’t heard “Pour Some Sugar on Me” yet, you haven’t lived.
