If there’s any one band that’s going the right thing when it comes to merchandising, it’s Iron Maiden. They’ve got an instantly-iconic logo with it’s own font, and then there’s Eddie, their mascot from the beginning. He’s been through a lot over the years, including being sentenced to an insane asylum, sent back to egyptian times, dying and then coming back to life, and being turned into a half-robot in a Blade Runner0like future. And that’s over the course of three years!
At any rate, Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast is a role-playing turn-based online video game that’s coming up on a year of being out. While it’s free to play, you can buy stuff in-app that’ll allow you upgrades in Eddies and power and whatnot. It must be doing well, as they’ve just announced that there will be a comic book based on the game coming out.
Heavy Metal will be releasing the five-issue comic book. Based on the game, it’s about Eddie’s immortal soul being shattered and strewn across the cosmos. He has to travel across time and space to get his soul back. Heavy Metal’s Jeff Krelitz spoke to Nerdist about the series:
“As a lifelong fan of Iron Maiden, it is a privilege to publish the first comic giving a narrative to their iconic mascot, Eddie. When we discussed the potential of coming together on this project it was immediately clear that there was no better home for Iron Maiden than Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal’s nearly half-century-long history of either working with or launching the careers of only the most accomplished artists continues here with the amazing team Iron Maiden has working on this series.”
The story was written by Llexi Leon and Ian Edginton with Kevin J. West contributing art, and it will premiere in July’s Heavy Metal #287.
