3. Black Rock –
I love this hike because of the pay off. Most of the hikes I try to do I call “pay off” hikes, and of course, the “pay offs” are the views. You can get into Black Rock Forest by parking on Reservoir Road right off of 9W (there is a sign that says Black Rock Forest). With this hike there are many options. You can stay on the road and meander up through the forest passing Upper Reservoir and Aleck Meadow Reservoir on the way. This hike is great for doggies in the summer for swimming and keeping cool. You can jump in as well! Just don’t get caught. To get to the Black Rock viewpoint you have to take the yellow Highlands trail right off of White Oak Road. On a nice day you get a western view that includes the Shawangunks and the Catskills way in the distance. You can go walk back to your car the same way or create your own path with the many trails that zigzag through the beautiful Black Rock Forest.
