It’s not that often when metal creeps its way into mainstream pop culture. So when metal/hard rock acts do actually pop up in beloved sitcoms, dramatic films, cartoons or even reality series, it’s kind of awesome. So in the weekly column Remember When, Metal Insider recalls the most random instances of metal’s elite appearing in front of the camera.
Who said Glenn Danzig doesn’t have a sense of humor? The original Misfits frontman, who’s as legendary for his voice and onstage presence as he is for his temperamental attitude, showed off his funny bone earlier this year on Portlandia. However, you could argue that Danzig first proved he could laugh at himself when he appeared in the first season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force back in 2002.
In this particular episode of the Adult Swim animated series, Danzig buys the character Carl’s house so that he can enjoy the spring of elf blood that’s been spewing from the back yard pool. The also comes with the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past From the Future, who eventually flees next door in hiding because as the ghost puts it, “He is so annoying, he is so frightening, and he doesn’t wear a shirt!” Granted, Aqua Teen Hunger Force actually has a long history with metal, but the fact that Danzig is even there, let alone insistent that he finds the Cybernetic Ghost because he’s low on the blood-front, is so odd that it’s one of the best moments from the entire show’s run.
So take a break from watching fan-filmed footage of the Misfits’ reunion (yes, we’re also excited for the original lineup to potentially do more things together in the future, too) and relive Danzig’s brief time as Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad’s neighbor.
